A lot of angry, opinionated people are posting on facebook right now about the “Not Guilty” verdict in the Casey Anthony trial. I’m not going to comment on whether or not that was the right verdict, because I am not a member of the jury, the judge overseeing the case, or involved in it in any way.

I will, however, encourage anyone who is so furious about it to make a donation, however modest, to Childhelp, an organization devoted to the prevention and treatment of child abuse. Here are some grim statistics from the website:

Almost five children die every day as a result of child abuse. More than three out of four are under the age of 4.

90% of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way; 68% are abused by family members.

Abused teens are 3 times less likely to practice safe sex, putting them at greater risk for STDs.

Children who experience child abuse & neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime.

For my own two cents… Disabled children are much more likely to experience abuse than their neurotypical, able-bodied peers, and I am a survivor of child abuse. This makes the issue especially close to my heart. Why don’t you donate? It goes a lot further to end child abuse than joining facebook groups which tell the defendant in this particular case to go to hell, calling her an “evil bitch” or a “dumb cunt”, or saying you’ll give her the death penalty yourself. Let’s make a difference together.
